When Fujifilm released the X-Pro 1 and X-E1 in 2012, the photography world stood up and took notice.  The first generation Fuji X-Trans sensors and processing technology were really something special, and though the sensors aren’t “full frame”, they produce some of the tastiest files you’ll ever get from any camera, and the image quality is nothing short of spectacular.  But what these cameras brought in IQ, they also lacked in Autofocus speed. MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett is no stranger to the Fuji Cams – and the X-Pro 1 and X-E1 were two of his favorite [More]
“If you’re not already using LEDs, you will be…”   MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett knows the importance of having a continuous light source for shooting Hybrid – and as more photo and video pros begin to combine their work into innovative new Hybrid eProducts, on thing is certain.  LED Lighting will become the must have tool of the new generation.   So if you’re looking to add an LED or two to your portrait lighting kit, you want to see the best way to get the best possible color from any LED, you’re thinking about shooting [More]
As we move into Hybrid Photography, where traditional still photos are skillfully blended with video, audio and graphics, the importance of an always on lighting source becomes greater and greater.  After all, flash doesn’t really work very well when you’re shooting video.  The obvious option here is the new generation of LED lighting that is emerging from numerous companies, but not all LEDs are created equally. In the video above, MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett talks about the ups and downs of today’s LED lights, and how to get the most out of them when you’re shooting [More]
MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography “Coach” Will Crockett of DiscoverMirrorless.com stops by the Photo Manufacturers Association (PMA) as well as the CES Show in Las Vegas, NV to talk Hybrid Photography and why he believes that  “High Volume” Photographers (like School Portrait Shooters) should and will be turning to mirrorless cameras. Will writes:  High volume photographers constantly face the challenge of becoming more efficient and need to find smarter ways to make more dollars per hour.  Volume photographers must be able to shoot high quality images at a really fast, rapid rate and many are seeking some guidance as they [More]
Change is coming, folks.  As technology advances and new and wonderful things become possible, it’s inevitable that the most creative among us come up with new and innovative ways to express or deliver their art. Once upon a time, the only way you could listen to music was to go and see it performed live.  Then came the phonograph and radio.  We’ve seen delivery systems progress from vinyl records to tapes (reel to reel, 8-track and cassette).  In the 80s, we gained the ability to play our music from a beam of light, as lasers read the information stored on [More]
MC Contributor Will Crockett (DiscoverMirrorless.com) answers another reader question, this time about the Panasonic Lumix GH2, which you can now get for about $750 USD with a kit lens ($650 Body Only) – this is a HUGE BARGAIN! Here’s what Crockett says:  The Lumix GH2 that we are so fond of here in my studio is being replaced by the highly touted GH3. That means the GH2 is now priced at closeout and really is a bargain. Our take:  The Panasonic Lumix GH2 has been one of the most celebrated cameras of the last two years since it debuted in [More]

With the advent of cameras such as the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and Olympus’ OM-D E-M5 and the new OM-D E-M1, we have finally witnessed the realization of professional level mirrorless camera systems, complete with weather sealing.  But as MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett (HybridPhoto.PRO) will tell you, “weather resistant” does not mean “weather proof.”  In the video above, Coach Crockett explains some easy and inexpensive ways to protect your camera gear, even in the harshest of Polar Vortexes. Will Writes… The Lumix GH3 is promoted as a “weather sealed” camera and includes a few of the lenses [More]
Marc Hauser is one of the world’s most renowned portrait photographers, and he has a history of being on top of, if not leading, trends in the industry.  Prime example…  Marc was one of the first photographers to move away from film and embrace digital imaging, but he is also not one to sacrifice quality for the sake of being trendy.  He just recognizes when better technology emerges that allows him to more efficiently product the breathtaking images for which he’s famous. In the video above, MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer “Coach” Will Crockett (HybridPhoto.pro) takes us on a [More]
OK…  Let me say this right out of the gate.  The Sony A7 and Sony A7R are FANTASTIC Cameras!  If you’re a pro or advanced enthusiast photographer who demands the very best in image quality, and you have advanced photography/videography skills, then these full frame darlings may be just what you’re looking for.  They offer great value for the money and match up very well when compared to their DSLR counterparts (and we’re talking the very top end DSLRs), and if you pick one up, I’m very confident that you’re going to love it (if you want to know more [More]

If you’ve ever been shooting on the fly and wanted to quickly switch over to video mode from photo, then you know that activating (or even finding) the video button can sometimes be somewhat of a challenge. One guy who has TONS of experience shooting photos and videos is MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett, and he may have just the solution you’re looking for. Will writes… Some cameras have their video record buttons recessed a bit into the camera body to prevent you from accidentally hitting it.  That also makes it hard to find sometimes when you [More]
Throughout history, there have been those with the ability to recognize adapt to the changing times, and it has been these individuals who have brought forth innovations that have literally changed the world. Think of people like Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Henry Ford, and more recently, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. Today…  right now, we find ourselves at the beginning of a shift in the world of photography. As more and more mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, etc.) are getting into the hands of consumers – and let’s face it, folks… these things are ubiquitous as it is – photographers [More]
Our good friend Marlene Hielema (DiscoverMirrorless.com and Imagemaven.com) recently ran into an issue with the custom white balance settings on her camera where the colors just seemed to fluctuate no matter what she did.  After a TON of research and finally conferring with a colleague who had a lot of experience shooting at the particular venue in which she was experiencing the difficulties in question, Marlene got to the root of the problem, and her experience can serve as a valuable lesson to us all. Here’s how Marlene tells the story… Let me set the stage Camera: Panasonic Lumix GH3 [More]
The video above is a brutally honest review of the new Canon T5i by theCameraStore’s Chris Niccolls, and he does an excellent job pointing out that there’s really nothing new to see here.  I mean really, what has Canon done here other than to slap “T5i” where “T4i” once resided on what is basically the same camera body.  While this is an extreme example and is in now way indicative of DSLRs as a whole, Chris’ review does illustrate a point… The Innovations in Mirrorless Cameras have surpassed those of DSLRs by leaps and bounds Case in point:  About the [More]

WPPI 2013 was bigger and better than ever, and there was a lot of buzz surrounding our friends and Hybrid Photography Superstars from DiscoverMirrorless.com – namely, Hybrid Pioneer Will Crockett and the Ultra Talented and Ultra Cool Suzette Allen and Giulio Sciorio. With each passing day, there are more and more people checking out the Hybrid Photoverse here on MC and on our sister site, DiscoverMirrorless, and it seems like WPPI was a launching pad of sorts for those who are seeing the Hybrid Light. Here are some highlights from the show… First up, is an interview with Kayce Baker, [More]
MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Rock Star Will Crockett answers a reader question from our sister site, DiscoverMirrorless.com, and debunks one of the biggest myths there is about shooting video. Will Writes… One of our readers named Mike asked about one of the common “rules” you hear floating around the interwebs.  You know, the one that says that when you’re shooting video you need to use a shutter speed that’s 2 times the framerate.  (“Need”…  Ouch – I hate that word!) Is that true?  Not so fast…  Watch the video above and read my response below to find out just [More]
A little while ago Carlos, a reader here on MirrorlessCentral, submitted a question about using Pocket Wizards with Mirrorless Cameras.  So to get the best possible answer that I could for Carlos, I went straight to the big dig himself – MC Contributor and Photo Innovator Will Crockett (DiscoverMirrorless.com), and Will whipped up a video response complete with some exciting news. Here’s what Will has to say… “As photographers, we often need to wirelessly trigger studio flash and battery powered portable flash from our mirrorless cameras.  When we need only manual exposure flash, like studio strobes, basic Pocket Wizards work [More]
An interview with Lorry from Quantum, who shows off the new Quantum Omicron LED Ringlight. The Quantum Omicron is one of our favorite pieces of equipment for Hybrid Photography.  It provides a “chromatically correct” LED light array by incorporating a mix of high quality white and colored LEDs to deliver true color rendition. Both the flash and continuous light produce a 60° beam angle with 5000K temperature. For more on the Quantum Omicron, check out this post by MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett. Buy the Quantum Omicron LED Ringlight on Amazon Here
Lenses…  They’re arguably the most important component of the image making formula. Indeed, a great lens can make a mediocre camera sing in much the same way that a mediocre lens can stifle a great camera.  But should we be quick to evaluate whether or not a lens is a gem or a dud?  Recently, two image making masters sat down and had such a discussion. While attending the WPPI show in Las Vegas, MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Trail Blazer Will Crockett (DiscoverMirrorless.com) sat down for coffee and conversation with wildlife photography legend Scott Bourne (PhotoFocus.com), and the two [More]
MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett tackles another reader question from Dave on DiscoverMirrorless.com, who requests advice about which wide angle lenses are best for micro 4/3 cameras. Here’s the Question as submitted by reader Dave… I’m shooting interiors for real estate listings. I’ve been using a DX with a 12-24 and since the fall an FX with a 24 and hopefully soon a 16-35, but I’m looking forward to getting a 4/3 camera – most likely a Lumix G,GH…. mainly for video at this point. In my searching I don’t seem to see much choice in the [More]
