A little while ago Carlos, a reader here on MirrorlessCentral, submitted a question about using Pocket Wizards with Mirrorless Cameras.  So to get the best possible answer that I could for Carlos, I went straight to the big dig himself – MC Contributor and Photo Innovator Will Crockett (DiscoverMirrorless.com), and Will whipped up a video response complete with some exciting news.

Here’s what Will has to say…

“As photographers, we often need to wirelessly trigger studio flash and battery powered portable flash from our mirrorless cameras.  When we need only manual exposure flash, like studio strobes, basic Pocket Wizards work like a charm and behave just like they do on our pro DSLRs.  But wireless TTL flash?  Different story…

As you know, I am known globally as an expert on flash and particularly wireless TTL flash systems and I have used them all from Pocket Wizard and Radio Popper, to Skyport and FreeXwire.  But my favorite Flash system by far has been the Q-Flash by Quantum.  Of course, you can’t get Q-Flash to work with a mirrorless camera, right?  Not so fast…

While that may have been true even up to a few months ago, it seems that many of the major flash companies are beginning to see the light (~_^), and since the release of professional quality mirrorless systems like the Olympus OM-D E-M5, the Fuji X-Pro1 and X-E1, and most recently the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and the Lumix G5.  As more photo and video pros are beginning to move into mirrorless camera systems, these lighting companies are beginning to recognize the need to adapt, or be left behind.  So I’ve been working hand in hand with the folks over at Quantum to adapt their Q-Flash system for Panasonic and Olympus Cameras (and soon, Fuji too – but you didn’t hear that from me), and I’m excited to see that my favorite flashes will soon be working hand in hand with my favorite mirrorless camera systems.”

Editor’s Note:

Will unveiled some of these bad bays at WPPI 2013 in Las Vegas last week, and the response was phenomenal (one of the Q-Flash sets was even purple!).  The last 12 months have seen a great evolution in mirrorless cameras…  Lots of pro bodies, pro lenses and now pro lighting to go with ’em.  Stay tuned, because something tells me that we ain’t seen nothin’ yet!
