Master Portrait Photographer Marc Hauser has been a professional portrait photographer for more than 34 years and is a legend in the world of photography  Marc is renowned the world over for his work, which has literally stopped traffic – His portrait of Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman, used for a Bigsby & Kruthers ad on a building overlooking Chicago’s Kennedy Expressway, caused traffic jams as drivers slowed to gawk at the larger-than-life Rodman. At age 14 he was an apprentice to renowned fashion photographer Stan Malinowski. As a teenager, Hauser produced hundreds of album covers in collaboration with Album [More]

As the era of Hybrid Photography takes hold (and it IS taking hold…  faster than any of us expected at this point), the need for always on LED lighting solutions becomes more and more prevalent.  In the video above, Chris Niccolls and the CameraStore Crew and special guest Rob Caleffi take a hands on look at some of the newest LED offerings from Fiilex. As we move into Hybrid Photography, where traditional still photos are skillfully blended with video, audio and graphics, the importance of an always on lighting source becomes greater and greater.  After all, flash doesn’t really work very well when you’re shooting video.  The obvious option here is the new generation of LED lighting that is emerging from numerous companies, but not all LEDs are created equally. A little while ago Carlos, a reader here on MirrorlessCentral, submitted a question about using Pocket Wizards with Mirrorless Cameras.  So to get the best possible answer that I could for Carlos, I went straight to the big dig himself – MC Contributor and Photo Innovator Will Crockett (DiscoverMirrorless.com), and Will whipped up a video response complete with some exciting news. Here’s what Will has to say… “As photographers, we often need to wirelessly trigger studio flash and battery powered portable flash from our mirrorless cameras.  When we need only manual exposure flash, like studio strobes, basic Pocket Wizards work [More]

The Quantum Omicron is one of our favorite pieces of equipment for Hybrid Photography.  It provides a “chromatically correct” LED light array by incorporating a mix of high quality white and colored LEDs to deliver true color rendition. Both the flash and continuous light produce a 60° beam angle with 5000K temperature. For more on the Quantum Omicron, check out this post by MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett. Buy the Quantum Omicron LED Ringlight on Amazon Here
As we move away from traditional still photography and into the era of hybrid, the need for always on lighting solutions is becoming more and more important, and it’s looking more and more like LED lighting may be the best long term solution.  Small and Portable LED Light Panels can attach directly to your camera’s hot shoe adapter, they throw out brilliant light, they don’t run hot and they don’t eat up a lot of power.  But although their light is brilliant, it can also be a little harsh and it tends to focus in a small area. Innovation to [More]

MC Contributor, Hybrid Photography Pioneer and Photo-Video Ninja Will Crockett replies to a reader question about LED Lighting on our sister website, DiscoverMirrorless.com. Will writes… “The ultimate hybrid photo studio is decked out with all LED mains, fills and hairlights so we can shoot still photos or video files at any time. To do that, we need to abandon flash and go to continuous light. LED panels are available now for the broadcast video folks with high CRI rating and are becoming semi-affordable.  But unfortunately, very few LED lights are ready for pro level still photography…  yet.” Will also discusses [More]

MC Contributor Will Crockett answers a reader question from DiscoverMirrorless.com – “I am very interested in what is available (and coming down the pike) in LED lights. Question: I’ve got a set of Westcott softboxes with fluorescent lights–nice light quality but not very bright. Do think I could put LED lights in there OR do you think the new LED lights will replace softboxes?” LED lighting is the perfect solution when it comes to Hybrid Photography – and the ability of these new LED lights to work both as a continuous light source OR flash will allow you to quickly [More]
MC Contributor Will Crockett (DiscoverMirrorless.com) shares two of his favorite hybrid LED lights that work just as good for still as they do for video. Will writes:  Did you know that you can flash some LED lights for still photography?  Yep, you sure can AND the flash pulse is 4 to 6 times brighter than the LED can glow continuously. These are hybrid LED lights and are made to help us make the transition from shooting “still only” into shooting hybrid any time and anyplace we want to. They are easy to use, light, silent, easy on battery consumption and [More]

The Klyp is a case for iPhone 4/4s that allows you to mount a LED light and tripod to your phone. This looks to be a great option for those that use the iPhone for video calls and making web videos. Strange that there is no iPhone 5 version but I suspect that there will be one soon enough. The Manfrotto Klyp is available in several different configurations, with or without LED lights and [More]

Here’s Will’s Comments on the video: Snappy, snazzy, punchy, poppy ringlights are a part of my photographic style when shooting either DSLR or Mirrorless. For years I’ve used the ringflashes from Elinchrom and Profoto (still do!) but Quantum has introduced a hybrid ringlight called the Omicron that provides both flash and continuous LED [More]
