Our good friend and Pro Photo Guru Chuck Jones of theCameraForum has just made the switch to mirrorless. Chuck is a highly talented veteran photographer who has seen paradigm shifts in the photography industry before, most notably the shift from film to digital about a decade ago. He sees the writing on the wall for large, bulky and heavy DSLR systems, so he’s trading in his DSLR Gear in favor of a Panasonic Lumix GH3… and he’s not alone.
In this video, Chuck and 3 other photo/video colleagues (Paul Gero, Marc Weisberg and Pham Minh Son, PhD) discuss the Lumix GH3 and the lens options available for this breakthrough camera (including legacy lenses from Chuck’s Collection).
Chuck writes: My DSLR days are now over, my photographic needs different, and I’m finding a different way of visualizing how to tell stories that live, move, and breathe. My future as a photographer will be one of shooting a lightweight mirrorless camera and creating digital e-products. Though there will be DSLR’s made for many years to come, I will no longer be one of their customers. In a way, it’s a revisit to my transition from film to digital rewound again, but this time video is simmering slowly into the mix. It’s a bit like getting a sip of that other kind of kool-aid and liking the taste; the call of the wild, the spirit of adventure, the challenge of creating compelling stories… (Read Full Article on theCameraForum)
Our Take: Chuck may be one of the first, but he certainly won’t be the last, pro photographers to make the switch to mirrorless. There are bonafide monster systems coming out in the mirrorless realm, including the Fuji X-Pro1 and X-E1, the Olympus OM-D E-M5, the Sony NEX 6 and 7, and now the Panasonic Lumix GH3 that can match the DSLR big boys in still image quality while blowing them out of the water for video (quality and ease of use).
Attention Pro Photographers… If you’re not shooting video yet, you will need to be in the next few years. Hybrid is the coming wave.
As I’ve said before, the GH3 is a transformational camera. It is without question, the best “Hybrid” camera on the planet today, and every pro photographer we know who has gotten their hands on this little beast has been blown away, including Marlene. Make no mistake about it, this combination of camera and the new Panasonic Pro Lenses is the real deal, and it’s got a lot pro photogs ready to give up their DSLRs. Look for a flood of CaNikons to hit ebay soon…
