The Camera Store’s Chris Niccolls takes a look at the new Pentax MX-1 fixed lens compact camera.  The MX-1 was one of the few new camera releases of note at the 2013 Winter Trade Shows (CES, PMA, etc.), and it enters what has become a crowded field of quality compact cameras, such as the Sony RX100, the Panasonic Lumix LX7, the Canon S110, and soon – the Fuji X-20.

The MX-1’s design harkens back the great Pentax cameras of old and many will be drawn to the retro styling of this new camera which, when combined with current digital technology, makes the MX-1 a formidable entry into the compact realm.

We like the tilting touch screen, the fast and accurate autofocus, and the macro capability of this camera.  Since the final production model was just released, the jury will remain out until it can be put through a thorough testing.  There’s no doubt that with the MX-1 Pentax have created and interesting addition to the compact camera division and at $499 USD, it’s right in the thick of things with the competition.  It will be interesting to see how new cameras like the MX-1 and the Fuji X-20 stack up against the current cream of the crop, the Sony RX100 and Panasonic Lumix LX7 (Which is an incredible deal now at only $348 USD).  Stay Tuned…
