Marc Hauser is one of the world’s most renowned portrait photographers, and he has a history of being on top of, if not leading, trends in the industry.  Prime example…  Marc was one of the first photographers to move away from film and embrace digital imaging, but he is also not one to sacrifice quality for the sake of being trendy.  He just recognizes when better technology emerges that allows him to more efficiently product the breathtaking images for which he’s famous. In the video above, MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer “Coach” Will Crockett (HybridPhoto.pro) takes us on a [More]
Master Portrait Photographer Marc Hauser has been a professional portrait photographer for more than 34 years and is a legend in the world of photography  Marc is renowned the world over for his work, which has literally stopped traffic – His portrait of Chicago Bulls star Dennis Rodman, used for a Bigsby & Kruthers ad on a building overlooking Chicago’s Kennedy Expressway, caused traffic jams as drivers slowed to gawk at the larger-than-life Rodman. At age 14 he was an apprentice to renowned fashion photographer Stan Malinowski. As a teenager, Hauser produced hundreds of album covers in collaboration with Album [More]
‘Tis the season folks.  We’re barely into our Thanksgiving leftovers and Christmas is looming large.  The shopping season is in full swing, and as luck would have it, there are some PHENOMENAL DEALS to be had on some equally phenomenal cameras – even some of the newest releases.  Some of the things that factored into our picks were Image Quality, Video Quality, Build Quality, Handling, Ease of Use and whether or not the camera is equipped with Wi-Fi, which we believe is becoming a “must have” feature on the Hybrid Camera of today.  With that in mind… Here are Our [More]
Back on Valentine’s Day, we posted an article about a couple of films shot with the Panasonic Lumix GH2 that were making waves at the Sundance and Slamdance Fim Festivals.  Now one of those films, a sci-fi thriller by director Shane Carruth called Upstream Color (see trailer at the top) is starting to pull some big numbers at US Box Offices, amassing over $300,000 USD in receipts (and counting).  This is great news for indie filmmakers, especially considering that it’s now possible to capture cinema quality HD footage with a camera that costs less than $1,000 USD, and there are [More]
Our good friend Marlene Hielema (DiscoverMirrorless.com and Imagemaven.com) recently ran into an issue with the custom white balance settings on her camera where the colors just seemed to fluctuate no matter what she did.  After a TON of research and finally conferring with a colleague who had a lot of experience shooting at the particular venue in which she was experiencing the difficulties in question, Marlene got to the root of the problem, and her experience can serve as a valuable lesson to us all. Here’s how Marlene tells the story… Let me set the stage Camera: Panasonic Lumix GH3 [More]
The video above is a brutally honest review of the new Canon T5i by theCameraStore’s Chris Niccolls, and he does an excellent job pointing out that there’s really nothing new to see here.  I mean really, what has Canon done here other than to slap “T5i” where “T4i” once resided on what is basically the same camera body.  While this is an extreme example and is in now way indicative of DSLRs as a whole, Chris’ review does illustrate a point… The Innovations in Mirrorless Cameras have surpassed those of DSLRs by leaps and bounds Case in point:  About the [More]
The best Hybrid Camera on the planet just got better… New firmware updates are now available for the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and a pair of Lumix Lenses.  It seems that Panasonic have now simplified Wi-Fi connections between the GH3 and both PC and MAC computers, as well as adding a new high res MP4 option for video.  (video above features cool shots of Hong Kong taken with a GH3, courtesy of MergeProductions) Details of the firmware update are as follows… Connecting to PC via Wi-Fi by inputting the computer name (the NetBIOS name for Apple Mac computers) is enabled. 1920 [More]

Giulio writes… “I’ll show you how I can quickly build custom settings such as Retro, Color and Monochrome looks and store them in the GH3′s C1-3 buttons…like a BOSS. Now that you’ve got your function buttons set, quick menu customized and JPEG settings hooked up, you’re almost ready to shoot [More]

Giulio writes… “The GH3 comes with 7 picture profiles, including a custom profile that you can build and store in camera for latter use. The JPEG settings covered in this video will give you a starting point to get the best color out of your stills and videos. In addition to the JPEG settings you [More]
In Part II of his 4 part series on “How To Set Up Your Panasonic Lumix GH3 Like a BOSS”, MC Contributor and Hybrid Street Photography Ninja Giulio Sciorio (DiscoverMirrorless.com and SmallCameraBigPicture.com) dives into the Quick Menus on Panasonic’s new flagship camera. Giulio writes… “Every time I shoot with the GH3, I use the quick menu…every time! The quick menu is great for recalling settings on the fly instead of having to dig through the main menu on a regular basis. Using the quick menu will save you time and help you with your shooting accuracy, which of course makes you [More]

43Rumors received a nice piece of trivia regarding the Panasonic Lumix GH2.  It seems that Top Gear, which is the world’s most watched television show, uses the GH2 for their aerial photography (so it was most likely used in the sequence above). Here’s the tip as it appears on 43Rumors P13DigitalMedia sent me [the picture below] with the following text: “If you want some trivia, the world’s most watched TV show, Top Gear uses the Lumix GH2 for aerial shots (pic via twitter).”  The BBC has very strict rules regarding image quality and I am glad to see they use the [More]
In the video above, MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett answers a reader question that was posted by a gentleman named Trace on our sister site, DiscoverMirrorless.com. Question… “We do video work and for some clients, and we need to achieve a little more of an “artisan” look than I can get from a Canon XF100 (in particular shallow depth of field). We are about to invest in a new camera system. We do want to shoot some still work, but 90% of the decision is based on video performance. We edit primarily on FCPX. Most of our [More]
MC Contributor and Photo/Video/Hybrid Photography Super Hero Will Crockett answers a reader question posed on DiscoverMirrorless.com about sensor size and whether or not it really matters, or if it’s just a bunch of marketing hype? As we’ve stated in this space before, the image quality lines between mirrorless camera systems with their “crop” sensors and “full frame” DSLR systems has been blurred over the last few years, and now there are several mirrorless systems that are cracking the “Pro Level” glass ceiling.  So can the smaller sensors on mirrorless cameras hold their own against the big boys?  More and more [More]
Since it’s launch in September of 2012, the Panasonic Lumix GH3 has been receiving hoards of positive reviews and praise from both photo and video professionals the world over.  There’s no doubt that the GH3 is a top caliber camera, but is it the best mirrorless camera ever? Popular Photography Magazine thinks so, and they’re featuring the Lumix GH3 on the cover of their latest issue (see below) G on the GH3 MC Contributor Giulio Sciorio wrote the following in an article on SmallCameraBigPicture.com Pop Photo is calling the Panasonic Lumix GH3 the best mirrorless camera to date, and I [More]
43Rumors reports that the latest tests published by DxOmark reveal that a $5,500 Leica M Full Frame Sensor Camera could not match the image quality of top tier micro 4/3 cameras like the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 (see above). This is no slight against the Leica, which is a phenomenal camera.  It’s just more proof that the gap in image quality between micro 4/3 sensors and their “full frame” cousins has been closed.    M43 for the Win! Our good friend Marlene Hielema (DiscoverMirrorless.com and ImageMaven.com) has just gone through a conversion of sorts. You see, Marlene is a long time corporate photographer who is used to capturing all of her images in RAW format, but now that she’s shooting with a Panasonic Lumix GH3, that’s all could be changing. Marlene writes… “I’m a longtime raw shooter. Perfect WB. Perfect Exposure. Perfect tonal range. Perfect everything. Perfect for corporate photography. But perfect can sometimes be boring. Then I got my Lumix GH3 camera, and soon discovered the Creative Control mode.“ Soon after, she began to play with the [More]

David Thorpe offers up this outstanding in depth review of the Panasonic Lumix GH3, up to and including a features and set up walkthrough. The Lumix GH3 is the most professional micro 4/3 camera to date.  When paired with the new Panasonic Pro Spec Zoom Lenses, it easily rivals and even surpasses cameras that cost 3 times it’s price (Both Consumer Reports and German Institute Stiftung Warentest rated the Panasonic Lumix GH3 as the top camera in their respective tests). Though the GH3 and Olympus OM-D E-M5 are definitely cut from different molds, the emerging trend are that there are [More]
A few days ago, we reported that the Panasonic Lumix GH3 had outscored all comers in Consumer Reports testing.  Now it seems that the GH3 is coming out on top of yet another test, this one from Germany. 43Rumors posted an announcement from Panasonic Germany (Here’s the Press Release) that German Institute Stiftung Warentest gave the Panasonic Lumix GH3 the best rating of all DSLR or DSLM (mirrorless) cameras – beating out other highly acclaimed cameras like the Canon 6D and Nikon D-800! 43Rumors Reports “I speak German and know Stiftung Warentest very well, so I know that we can 100% trust [More]
Jordan Steele over at AdmiringLight.com currently has his hands on three of the top mirrorless cameras systems and took the opportunity to pit them against each other for a head to head to head comparison. In corner #1, it’s the Panasonic Lumix GH3.  In corner #2, it’s the Olympus OM-D E-M5.  And in corner #3, it’s the Fuji X-E1.  Are you ready to RUMMMMMMMMBBBBLLLLLEEEE?! Here’s Jordan’s preliminary conclusion… “Well, the X-E1 is a camera with fantastic image quality, that much is certain.  Not surprisingly, it produces cleaner images throughout the ISO range and retains great detail.  Is the Fuji the [More]
One of the undeniable factors that is accelerating the advent of Hybrid Photography are the new ways that consumers require their photos and videos to be delivered. As Social Media Sharing sites like Facebook and Pinterest, and Smart Devices like iPhones, iPads and Androids become more popular, we have seen a move away from traditional methods of delivery – for example, printed photos and DVDs – and towards e-Products that can be delivered directly to the internet and those smart devices.  But are the formats of those new delivery points changing the way the photographers capture their images? At a [More]
Consumer Reports recently tested a large group of SLR and “SLR-Like” cameras (in other words…  mirrorless) and were surprised to find that one camera, the Panasonic Lumix GH3, “scored higher than all the SLRs tested in this group.” The reasons behind the results… CR states the following – “…part of the story revolves around how the Lumix DMC-GH3 and other SLR-likes have built in many of the features consumers want. For example, the GH3 is one of the few advanced cameras with a swiveling touch-screen LCD. And you can set focus and shoot by touching the display. You can find [More]
