Our good friend Marlene Hielema (DiscoverMirrorless.com and Imagemaven.com) recently ran into an issue with the custom white balance settings on her camera where the colors just seemed to fluctuate no matter what she did.  After a TON of research and finally conferring with a colleague who had a lot of experience shooting at the particular venue in which she was experiencing the difficulties in question, Marlene got to the root of the problem, and her experience can serve as a valuable lesson to us all. Here’s how Marlene tells the story… Let me set the stage Camera: Panasonic Lumix GH3 [More]
“If you’re not already using LEDs, you will be…”   MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett knows the importance of having a continuous light source for shooting Hybrid – and as more photo and video pros begin to combine their work into innovative new Hybrid eProducts, on thing is certain.  LED Lighting will become the must have tool of the new generation.   So if you’re looking to add an LED or two to your portrait lighting kit, you want to see the best way to get the best possible color from any LED, you’re thinking about shooting [More]
As the era of Hybrid Photography takes hold (and it IS taking hold…  faster than any of us expected at this point), the need for always on LED lighting solutions becomes more and more prevalent.  In the video above, Chris Niccolls and the CameraStore Crew and special guest Rob Caleffi take a hands on look at some of the newest LED offerings from Fiilex. TCS Reports… LEDs are quickly becoming an enormously popular way to light videos, but there are very few affordable, modifiable lights. The Fiilex P360 is an extremely versatile light, compatible with many light modifiers. To test [More]
As we move into Hybrid Photography, where traditional still photos are skillfully blended with video, audio and graphics, the importance of an always on lighting source becomes greater and greater.  After all, flash doesn’t really work very well when you’re shooting video.  The obvious option here is the new generation of LED lighting that is emerging from numerous companies, but not all LEDs are created equally. In the video above, MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett talks about the ups and downs of today’s LED lights, and how to get the most out of them when you’re shooting [More]
An interview with Lorry from Quantum, who shows off the new Quantum Omicron LED Ringlight. The Quantum Omicron is one of our favorite pieces of equipment for Hybrid Photography.  It provides a “chromatically correct” LED light array by incorporating a mix of high quality white and colored LEDs to deliver true color rendition. Both the flash and continuous light produce a 60° beam angle with 5000K temperature. For more on the Quantum Omicron, check out this post by MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett. Buy the Quantum Omicron LED Ringlight on Amazon Here
Here’s a great (and cheap) DIY project that you can easily make at home and knock out in no time.  In the video above, Photographer Tiffany Angeles demonstrates how to make a dual purpose backdrop/reflector that you can use in your own home studio, or even when you’re on location.  The materials are inexpensive and you can find them at any Home Supplies Store.  These can also be used as backdrops for entertaining, such as behind cake tables, or make a great background for photo booths due their light weight and ability to easily pin various materials to the background. As we move away from traditional still photography and into the era of hybrid, the need for always on lighting solutions is becoming more and more important, and it’s looking more and more like LED lighting may be the best long term solution.  Small and Portable LED Light Panels can attach directly to your camera’s hot shoe adapter, they throw out brilliant light, they don’t run hot and they don’t eat up a lot of power.  But although their light is brilliant, it can also be a little harsh and it tends to focus in a small area. Innovation to [More]

MC Contributor, Hybrid Photography Pioneer and Photo-Video Ninja Will Crockett replies to a reader question about LED Lighting on our sister website, DiscoverMirrorless.com. Will writes… “The ultimate hybrid photo studio is decked out with all LED mains, fills and hairlights so we can shoot still photos or video files at any time. To do that, we need to abandon flash and go to continuous light. LED panels are available now for the broadcast video folks with high CRI rating and are becoming semi-affordable.  But unfortunately, very few LED lights are ready for pro level still photography…  yet.” Will also discusses [More]

PictureCorrect posted a great article on How To Photograph Christmas Lights (the video above is a short tutorial on the same subject from Howcast).  Great tips for those who want to capture the beauty and magic of the Christmas Season! Here’s some bullet points from PictureCorrect’s article: The best time to photograph outdoor holiday lights is after the sun goes down but before it is totally dark. During that time period, there is still a touch of ambient light in the atmosphere. Yet it is dark enough so that the lights will not look dull or become overpowered by daylight. [More]
MC Contributor and Pro Photo/Video Stud Will Crockett (DiscoverMirrorless.com) discusses the tools and methods he used on a recent shoot for a Chicago Cupcake Company that has caught the attention of Food Blogger Paula Thomas. Will writes:  I made friends with a very talented food blogger in Seattle who saw a small hybrid cupcake piece I made for a local baker. She, like most foodie bloggers, wants a speedy way to show the food for their posts. But when I read most blogs I always think of how much better the blogger can get their point across about the dining [More]
MC Contributor Giulio Sciorio (SmallCameraBigPicture.com) reports on the new Manfrotto Klyp for iPhone. Here’s what Giulio Says… Today, Manfrotto introduced the Klyp system for iPhone 4/4s. The Klyp is a case for iPhone 4/4s that allows you to mount a LED light and tripod to your phone. This looks to be a great option for those that use the iPhone for video calls and making web videos. Strange that there is no iPhone 5 version but I suspect that there will be one soon enough. The Manfrotto Klyp is available in several different configurations, with or without LED lights and [More]
