Here’s a short but great video by Mark Toal, my good friend and fellow Hybrid Hero from DiscoverMirrorless.com about using auto vs manual control for video on the Panasonic Lumix GH3. Mark is a highly talented photographer who also works for Panasonic, and this video is in response to a schlew of questions he received after doing a G+ Hangout series about video with another Hybrid Hero, Carol Schlintz. Mark always brings great information to the table and we definitely wanted to share this with our readers.  Enjoy! Buy the Panasonic Lumix GH3 on Amazon Here
Oops…  Looks like someone over at Techradar prematurely released a review of the new Panasonic Lumix GF6 even though the camera isn’t scheduled to be released until April 9th (next Tuesday). The review was quickly taken down, but not before some eager folks grabbed some of the photos and posted them up in numerous places on the interwebs.  There’s a gallery of the leaked photos over on Imgur (featured in the video above and embedded at the bottom of this article) and some on the DPReview forums. What’s in the new GF6? It looks as if Panasonic are kicking things [More]
WPPI 2013 was bigger and better than ever, and there was a lot of buzz surrounding our friends and Hybrid Photography Superstars from DiscoverMirrorless.com – namely, Hybrid Pioneer Will Crockett and the Ultra Talented and Ultra Cool Suzette Allen and Giulio Sciorio. With each passing day, there are more and more people checking out the Hybrid Photoverse here on MC and on our sister site, DiscoverMirrorless, and it seems like WPPI was a launching pad of sorts for those who are seeing the Hybrid Light. Here are some highlights from the show… First up, is an interview with Kayce Baker, [More]
The best Hybrid Camera on the planet just got better… New firmware updates are now available for the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and a pair of Lumix Lenses.  It seems that Panasonic have now simplified Wi-Fi connections between the GH3 and both PC and MAC computers, as well as adding a new high res MP4 option for video.  (video above features cool shots of Hong Kong taken with a GH3, courtesy of MergeProductions) Details of the firmware update are as follows… Connecting to PC via Wi-Fi by inputting the computer name (the NetBIOS name for Apple Mac computers) is enabled. 1920 [More]
The Panasonic Lumix G5 is one of the best cameras to be released in the last year, and it would easily be the flagship model in many company’s product lines.  Had it not been for the subsequent release of the Lumix GH3, it more than likely would’ve garnered a lot more attention.  Consequently, the G5 is probably one of the most overlooked cameras of the last year as well, and according to the folks over at 43Rumors, although the G5 was only released a scant 9 months ago it appears that Panasonic are on the verge of announcing the release [More]
In the video above, David Thorpe talks about the new Panasonic Lumix 35-100mm 2.8 Pro Zoom Lens, one of two new Panasonic Pro Spec Zoom lenses that were launched simultaneously with the Panasonic Lumix GH3 towards the end of 2012. These lenses are among the more expensive in the micro 4/3 standard, but they are professional quality through and through and are made to take the place of the “go to” lenses that most DSLR shooters are used to.  With a constant aperture of f/2.8, they’re bright and fast, and the quality of the images they produce is absolutely superb. Lenses…  They’re arguably the most important component of the image making formula. Indeed, a great lens can make a mediocre camera sing in much the same way that a mediocre lens can stifle a great camera.  But should we be quick to evaluate whether or not a lens is a gem or a dud?  Recently, two image making masters sat down and had such a discussion. While attending the WPPI show in Las Vegas, MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Trail Blazer Will Crockett (DiscoverMirrorless.com) sat down for coffee and conversation with wildlife photography legend Scott Bourne (PhotoFocus.com), and the two [More]
MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett tackles another reader question from Dave on DiscoverMirrorless.com, who requests advice about which wide angle lenses are best for micro 4/3 cameras. Here’s the Question as submitted by reader Dave… I’m shooting interiors for real estate listings. I’ve been using a DX with a 12-24 and since the fall an FX with a 24 and hopefully soon a 16-35, but I’m looking forward to getting a 4/3 camera – most likely a Lumix G,GH…. mainly for video at this point. In my searching I don’t seem to see much choice in the [More]
In the 4th and final installment of his series on “How To Set Up Your Panasonic Lumix GH3 Like a BOSS”, MC Contributor and Hybrid Street Photography Ninja Giulio Sciorio (DiscoverMirrorless.com and SmallCameraBigPicture.com) peels back the curtain to reveal how he gets the most out of the GH3’s custom settings. Giulio writes… “I’ll show you how I can quickly build custom settings such as Retro, Color and Monochrome looks and store them in the GH3′s C1-3 buttons…like a BOSS. Now that you’ve got your function buttons set, quick menu customized and JPEG settings hooked up, you’re almost ready to shoot [More]
In Part III of his 4 part series on “How To Set Up Your Panasonic Lumix GH3 Like a BOSS”, MC Contributor and Hybrid Street Photography Ninja Giulio Sciorio (DiscoverMirrorless.com and SmallCameraBigPicture.com) tackles the JPEG Settings on Panasonic’s new flagship camera.  JPEG for the WIN! Giulio writes… “The GH3 comes with 7 picture profiles, including a custom profile that you can build and store in camera for latter use. The JPEG settings covered in this video will give you a starting point to get the best color out of your stills and videos. In addition to the JPEG settings you [More]
In Part II of his 4 part series on “How To Set Up Your Panasonic Lumix GH3 Like a BOSS”, MC Contributor and Hybrid Street Photography Ninja Giulio Sciorio (DiscoverMirrorless.com and SmallCameraBigPicture.com) dives into the Quick Menus on Panasonic’s new flagship camera. Giulio writes… “Every time I shoot with the GH3, I use the quick menu…every time! The quick menu is great for recalling settings on the fly instead of having to dig through the main menu on a regular basis. Using the quick menu will save you time and help you with your shooting accuracy, which of course makes you [More]
I’ve been trying to spread the love around with featured camera deals and stories, etc.  But honest to God, Panasonic have been offering such HUGE DEALS on some great cameras lately (I actually just received my Lumix LX7 that I snapped up for only $298 USD!) and they’re just too good to not share with our readers, especially considering that many of these deals are gone as soon as we can post them. Here are 3 deals I came across on the Lumix GX1, a tremendous camera that sold for anywhere from $700 to $900 USD just a scant year [More]
MC Contributor and Hybrid Street Photography Ninja Giulio Sciorio (DiscoverMirrorless.com and SmallCameraBigPicture.com) is back, this time with the first part of his 4 part series on “How To Set Up Your Panasonic Lumix GH3 Like a BOSS”. In this part, G focuses on the GH3’s 7 Custom Function Buttons. Giulio writes… “The Lumix GH3 is the only hybrid camera made for professionals and I love it. When properly set up for how I shoot, the GH3 just gets out of my way and lets me create. In this video, I’ll go over each of the GH3′s 7 custom function buttons, how [More]
43Rumors received a nice piece of trivia regarding the Panasonic Lumix GH2.  It seems that Top Gear, which is the world’s most watched television show, uses the GH2 for their aerial photography (so it was most likely used in the sequence above). Here’s the tip as it appears on 43Rumors P13DigitalMedia sent me [the picture below] with the following text: “If you want some trivia, the world’s most watched TV show, Top Gear uses the Lumix GH2 for aerial shots (pic via twitter).”  The BBC has very strict rules regarding image quality and I am glad to see they use the [More]
In the video above, MC Contributor and Hybrid Photography Pioneer Will Crockett answers a reader question that was posted by a gentleman named Trace on our sister site, DiscoverMirrorless.com. Question… “We do video work and for some clients, and we need to achieve a little more of an “artisan” look than I can get from a Canon XF100 (in particular shallow depth of field). We are about to invest in a new camera system. We do want to shoot some still work, but 90% of the decision is based on video performance. We edit primarily on FCPX. Most of our [More]
Two great deals to share today! First up, Amazon is offering the Panasonic Lumix G5 with the 14-42mm kit lens bundled with 45-150 power zoom lens (the video above shows the Panasonic G5 paired with the 45-150mm lens).  This is a great deal that we’ve seen on and off over the past few days, but it usually sells out fast. MC Contributor and Photo/Video/Hybrid Photography Super Hero Will Crockett answers a reader question posed on DiscoverMirrorless.com about sensor size and whether or not it really matters, or if it’s just a bunch of marketing hype? As we’ve stated in this space before, the image quality lines between mirrorless camera systems with their “crop” sensors and “full frame” DSLR systems has been blurred over the last few years, and now there are several mirrorless systems that are cracking the “Pro Level” glass ceiling.  So can the smaller sensors on mirrorless cameras hold their own against the big boys?  More and more [More]
Since it’s launch in September of 2012, the Panasonic Lumix GH3 has been receiving hoards of positive reviews and praise from both photo and video professionals the world over.  There’s no doubt that the GH3 is a top caliber camera, but is it the best mirrorless camera ever? Popular Photography Magazine thinks so, and they’re featuring the Lumix GH3 on the cover of their latest issue (see below) G on the GH3 MC Contributor Giulio Sciorio wrote the following in an article on SmallCameraBigPicture.com Pop Photo is calling the Panasonic Lumix GH3 the best mirrorless camera to date, and I [More]
Update…  Amazon have now lowered the price even more and the LX7 is now only $298 USD! Amazon now has the Panasonic Lumix LX7 on special for $329 $298USD.  This is an incredible deal on one of the best compact cameras around.  This little guy is packed with performance and features that let it easy trade shots with more expensive cameras like the Sony RX100, and it’s 24-90mm 1.7-2.3 Leica Summilux lens is the best, fastest and brightest that you’ll find on any compact in it’s class, hands down.  In fact, this lens performs so well in macro mode that [More]
MC Contributor, Hybrid Hero and Street Photography Ninja Giulio Sciorio (DiscoverMirrorless.com and SmallCameraBigPicture.com) is back, and this time he giving us the goods on the Panasonic Lumix G5. G reveals his “secret sauce” on how to set up the Lumix G5 like a BOSS – and get the most out of what is one of the best, and most overlooked, cameras to be released in the last 12 months. Giulio writes… The Lumix G5 may be the little brother of the Panasonic’s flagship Hybrid Monster, the Lumix GH3 – but with the tips in this video I’ll show you how [More]
43Rumors reports that the latest tests published by DxOmark reveal that a $5,500 Leica M Full Frame Sensor Camera could not match the image quality of top tier micro 4/3 cameras like the Panasonic Lumix GH3 and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 (see above). This is no slight against the Leica, which is a phenomenal camera.  It’s just more proof that the gap in image quality between micro 4/3 sensors and their “full frame” cousins has been closed.    M43 for the Win! Our good friend Marlene Hielema (DiscoverMirrorless.com and ImageMaven.com) has just gone through a conversion of sorts. You see, Marlene is a long time corporate photographer who is used to capturing all of her images in RAW format, but now that she’s shooting with a Panasonic Lumix GH3, that’s all could be changing. Marlene writes… “I’m a longtime raw shooter. Perfect WB. Perfect Exposure. Perfect tonal range. Perfect everything. Perfect for corporate photography. But perfect can sometimes be boring. Then I got my Lumix GH3 camera, and soon discovered the Creative Control mode.“ Soon after, she began to play with the [More]

Nate “Blunty” Burr (aka Blunty3000) Takes an in depth look at the Pentax MX-1.  This is Pentax’s new entry into the fixed lens compact arena, and it’s introductory price of $479 USD has it sliding in quite nicely between the Panasonic Lumix LX7 (currently a steal at $399 USD) and the Sony RX100 ($648 USD), which are two of our favorite compact cameras of the last year, and both are exceptional.  But can the new MX-1 compete with the likes of Sony and Panasonic?
