Olympus picks up three red dot design awards

Hamburg, 19 March 2013 – Recognizing exceptional achievements in design for more than 50 years, the red dot awards are among the world’s most renowned and respected design prizes. This year, Olympus has been honoured with three red dot design awards simultaneously, with the PEN Lite (E-PL5) and STYLUS TG-2 cameras in the “Entertainment Technology and Cameras” category and Olympus THUNDERBEAT in the “Life Science and Medicine” category, which is the world’s first integrated hand instrument with both advanced bipolar and ultrasonic energy to simultaneously cut and seal vessels during minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Three innovative Olympus products have obtained the coveted red dot design award for 2013. Under the motto “In search of excellence”, an esteemed international jury comprising 37 experts determined that the PEN Lite (E-PL5), STYLUS TG-2 and THUNDERBEAT were among the best of a total of 4,662 submissions from 54 countries, made in the design award section this year.
In the “Entertainment Technology and Cameras” category, Olympus came out on top with two products. The versatile, 16.1 megapixel Live MOS Olympus PEN Lite (E-PL5) convinced the jury with its cutting-edge technology in a compact design matched with exceptional user-friendliness. Meanwhile, the flagship of the Olympus TOUGH series, the shock, frost, crush and waterproof STYLUS TG-2, could win over the jurors thanks to its combination of brawn and brains. The third red dot design award was bestowed in the “Life Science and Medicine” category to the Olympus THUNDERBEAT system which amalgamates the aspects of design, flexibility and state-of-the-art technology for minimally invasive surgery to make it the world’s first instrument that integrates ultrasonic and bipolar energies for the fast cutting and reliable sealing of vessels in a single, multifunctional instrument.

The awards will be conferred on 1 July 2013 as part of the annual red dot gala. Design aficionados can see the entire line-up of winning products first-hand in the customary “Design on stage – winners red dot award: product design 2013” special exhibition, running 2 to 28 July 2013 at the red dot design museum in Essen, Germany. Following this exhibition, the Olympus products will continue to be shown for one year in the 4,000m2 museum, located in the former boiler house of the Zeche Zollverein colliery, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The winning Olympus products can also be viewed in the online exhibition (http://www.red-dot.de) as well as in the upcoming red dot design yearbook.  (via PhotographyBlog)
